Centre for social Development (CSD) was started on democratic principles in the year 1992 after prolonged discussion and field study by the team of likeminded people with Dr. P. Bhagavatheeswaran as a Director with a vision of Preserving and promoting the local indigenous cultural heritage, harmony and artisan skills of the people and empowering socio-economically the weaker sections and discarded people of the society towards an egalitarian society. Support of the government could overcome the initial challenges to bring the unorganized weaker sections of the society to an achievable level. It is registered under FCRA & has approval of 12 AA and 80G of the I.T Act 1961, Govt. of India.
The mission of CSD is to rehabilitate and empowering both socially and economically through specialized staff team and suitable activities to the focused groups on Old age people, Destitute and Orphans, Scheduled Castes and Tribal, HIV/AIDS infected & affected, Child labor & Bonded labors, Landless Laborers and marginal farmers, Village artisans, Women, Youth and Children and Migrants. The various programs undertaken are through Awareness programs, Seminars, Workshops, Field Demonstration Programs, Skill up-gradation Training Programs, E.D.P. Training, Resource Management, Providing Micro Credit Facilities, Charitable activities, Rehabilitation Programs, General Intervention Programs & Health and Sanitation. It also undertakes various Pilot study/Survey/Investigation and the R & D Activities.
The skill-sets training given on Pottery (Terracotta, Red Clay Glazing), Fiber (Coir, Banana, Sisal), Building Materials (Stabilized mud blocks, conical tiles etc.,), Bamboo and Ethal Products Fabrication, Vermi Composting, Rain Water Harvesting and Water Recharge Pits, Palm Candy Preparation, Ginger Grass Oil Extraction, Food Processing, Low Cost Sanitation, Herbal Plantation, Tailoring and Garment Making.
The strategic approaches CSD takes are Creating mass awareness among the people about our cultural heritage and inheriting skill and science, Exploring the indigenous traditional health and medical system and rejuvenating the practice, Conducting applied research and development in the rural sectors on human resource, Promoting the empowerment process of the differentially skilled children and women, Specifically working for the comprehensive development of the single and old age men & women, orphans, women in distress, destitute and desolated women, women in trafficking, women in sex work, Working with tribal communities to understand the need of land use pattern, changes owing to the settlers and exploitation of nature resources, Community participatory green cover initiatives and water management programmes with the government and outsourced sponsored agencies, Taking special care on the HIV/AIDS affected and infected and promotes institutional care and support of the victim's community understanding.
